Golfers preparing for state
The SHS Golf Team placed seventh in their first home tournament this past weekend at Kendrick Golf Course. The team has competed in four other tournaments so far this season. They placed fourth in the September seventh tournament in Buffalo, and fifth in the other three tournaments.
Golf is a sport in which individuals shine. Senior golfer, Ben Wollenzien said, “I love the individuality golf provides.” Golfers are given the chance to improve on their own without worrying about an entire team.
The loss of senior golfers has really impacted the team this year because of the lack of experience. Head Coach Larry Martoglio said, ”This year’s team does not have the varsity tournament experience that teams in the past have had.”
Martoglio is not discouraged though. “The team is improving every week because there is so much room to grow. The team is so young that in the future, they’ll be very experienced.”
This weekend, the team will be competing in Casper in the state tournament. “The Three Crowns Golf Course in Casper will be one of the most difficult courses most of these golfers will see,” said Martoglio. He is hoping that the team will play well enough to place fourth.
