Broncs football opens season with win

The SHS football team started its season off with a 27-7 victory against the Laramie Plainsmen in Laramie last Friday with a strong running game and a great defensive effort.

Ranked fourth this year and looking to improve on last year’s state semifinal appearance, the Broncs took advantage of a inexperienced Laramie team with a new head coach.

The Broncs quickly drove down the field in their first offensive possession; however, a fumble in the red zone gave the ball back to the opposition. Once they regained the ball, the Broncs found the endzone on a Daniel Sessions run.

Another Sessions touchdown and two receiving scores from junior wide receiver Joe Shassetz put a sizeable difference on the scoreboard. The Plainsmen scored once late in the game to finish the game 27-7.

Sessions had a great individual performance, with 128 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Shassetz, also with two scores, had 57 yards receiving. A first year starter at quarterback, Kameron Eckard played well in his first game behind center according to teammates, despite having one interception.

However, as the Broncs look forward to playing Kelly Walsh on Friday night, they still have several things to improve on. “We need to work to lower turnovers. We had three turnovers while Laramie had zero, and in a typical game we wouldn’t win that type of game” said senior Nick Gill.

The Broncs are playing a Kelly Walsh team that lost to Gillette 52-12 last week on Friday night in Sheridan at 7 p.m.
