Wrestlers take second at Ron Thon

Gage Tyree and Cody Delk look on as they wait for their matches.

Arguably the biggest tournament of the season, the Sheridan wrestling team emerged as a powerhouse at the Ron Thon memorial in Riverton on Feb 7-8.

The Broncs had a successful meet with three first place champions. Braxton Cooper defeated his opponent in a close match winning the 106 weight class with a 4-3 decision. Freshman Hayden Hastings pinned his opponent in three minutes and twenty one seconds in the 126 weight class, and senior Cody Delk completed a back to back Ron Thon championship with a 7-5 decision over his opponent in the 182 weight class.

The tournament brought a unique opportunity to Hastings in that he now has an opportunity to become a four time Ron Thon champ. Only two other wrestlers have accomplished the feat and it would be quite an achievement to become the third four year champion. “It was a really cool experience” said Hastings, “I tend to put a lot of pressure on myself and before the meet I really felt relaxed and just tried to do my best… It was the biggest moment of the year for me.”

Another highlight from the meet resulted in Sheridan outscoring Gillette 153.5 to 146. It has been nearly 13 years since Sheridan has outscored Gillette and it was a good victory that brought the team together. “We beat Gillette in points but we still need work for regionals and state,” said assistant coach Scott Cleland.

The next dual begins Thursday, Feb 13 in Gillette where the two rivals will face each other again.
