The Wyoming program, Wyoming Genetic Heifer Program, requires students to first enter a drawing to win a heifer after filling out an application and meeting all of the requirements.

This September, Sheridan High School students have the opportunity  to win a cow.

Both Wyoming and Montana began a brand new program which allows students to win a heifer. The Wyoming program, Wyoming Genetic Heifer Program, requires students to  first enter a drawing to win a heifer after filling out an application and meeting all of the requirements.

Agriculture teacher Ward Cotton explains, “This program is a way for registered heifer breeders help young cattle breeders get started.” Cotton also says that this program can help students with no money get started in the cattle breeding business.

The deadline to apply for this program is the Sept. 15, 2013. If an applicant wins the drawing he or she will be given a registered heifer worth $1900.  The student  wins the heifer this fall and keeps the heifer for a year, then shows it at the Wyoming State Fair or The Niles Rodeo Fair in Montana. In the past four years only six students have won this drawing. The drawing will take place in Casper, Wyo. at the Wyoming Genetic Heifer headquarters, or in Montana at the Niles Rodeo in Billings this October.
